In
March 2004, River Garden Hebrew Home celebrated its 58th anniversary and held its annual meeting. Guests from crawling
toddlers to centenarians celebrated and enjoyed Klezmer, the cookout, the games and the beautiful 35-acre campus.
This campus is home to the River Garden Hebrew Home/Wolfson Health and Aging Center, The Coves independent retirement
community, The University of Florida Center for Geriatric Medicine, River Garden Home Health Agency, River Garden
Adult Day Program, the River Garden Foundation and the River Garden Geriatric Training Center. What started as
a nursing home in 1946 has evolved into a sophisticated system of services bringing good living to older people.
In any given year over 700 families and individuals are served through one of
our many long term care, rehabilitation and outpatient programs. From long term care for the physically frail or
the Alzheimer's victim to sophisticated rehabilitation for the bypass patient, over time, nearly every family in
our community is served.
River Garden is widely acknowledged to be one of the finest and most attractive
agencies of its kind. Those who don't know assume by appearance that we serve only a wealthy clientele. They are
surprised to learn that the majority, over 60%, of our residents are supported by Medicaid payments. These payments
fall short of the actual cost of care. As a result, River Garden must generate one million dollars each year (about
8% of budget) in order to continue to serve both rich and poor alike with caring and excellence.
We have been raising this amount though annual fundraising events, giving campaigns,
Federation support and with earnings from reserves. We are proud to have over one thousand individual donors giving
amounts great and small.
While River Garden is best known for its excellent care, it also is a teaching
nursing home and serves as a clinical training site for students of many care disciplines. Medical family practice
residents from the University of Florida and the Navy program rotate through the Home. Physical and Occupational
Therapy students do a rotation in the therapies department. Nursing students from the University of Florida also
rotate in the Home, as do social work and administration students from a number of universities. The residents
of the Home enjoy visiting with and helping teach these young caring professionals.
With Anniversary Day guests from ages 12 weeks to 101, River Garden is truly a
home for people of ALL AGES. With your help we will continue for years to come.
